花井さん、ビリケンって、アメリカ生まれなんです」全てはその言葉からでした。
今や世界的なイラストレーターの花井祐介氏。
多岐にわたるそのお仕事に共通してみえるのが、必ず自分で見て、触れたものを表現されること。先日発表された、アメリカを象徴するブランド、ペンドルトン社とのコラボレーションも、開拓時代からあるCOWBOYのロデオ大会「ラウンドアップ」を自ら訪れて体験し、その歴史に触れてから作品作りを手掛けたそうです。
そんな花井さんだから、ウエアハウスがつくる衣料のストーリーにも、興味を持って聴いてくれます。
でも、今回の依頼には少し違和感があった様子でした。
私が関西弁で話したことも脚を引っ張ったかもしれませんが・・・やっぱりビリケンといえば、大阪の通天閣にいるあの印象をお持ちだったのです。

そこで慌てた私は「花井さん、ビリケンはアメリカ生まれなんです」と、思わず口にしたのでした。
アメリカ文化に深く触れている方なので、そこからのお話は盛り上がり、楽しい内容に・・・
このような経緯から、ウエアハウスがお願いしたテーマが「アメリカのビリケン」です。
ビリケンを愛する我々が、一番見たかったのです。
ハナイビリケンを。

「THINGS AS THEY OUGHT TO BE」（物事を本来あるべき姿に導く）
アメリカで最初に生まれたビリケン。石膏でつくられた台座に膨られた言葉は、100年以上が経っても、我々に語りかけてくれます。

“Mr. Hanai, did you know that Billiken was actually born in America?”
That was how it all began.ｖ Yusuke Hanai is now an internationally renowned illustrator.
Across his wide-ranging body of work, one common thread stands out: he only expresses what he has seen and felt for himself.

A recent collaboration with Pendleton, an iconic American brand, is a perfect example. Hanai visited a rodeo event called the “Round-Up,” rooted in cowboy traditions from America’s frontier days. It was only after experiencing the event firsthand and immersing himself in its history that he began creating his work.
That’s exactly why someone like Hanai would take a genuine interest in the story behind the garments Warehouse creates.
But this time, something felt a little off to him.
Maybe my Kansai dialect didn’t help matters… but when I brought up Billiken, he immediately pictured the one from Osaka’s Tsutenkaku Tower.

So I blurted out, almost in a panic:
“Mr. Hanai, Billiken was born in America!”
Given his deep connection with American culture, the conversation took off from there―and what followed was a fun and engaging exchange.
That’s how Warehouse came to propose this theme:
“The American Billiken.”
As true Billiken lovers, this was the version we most wanted to see―
the Hanai Billiken.

"Things as they ought to be."

Those words are inscribed on the original plaster base of the first Billiken, created over a century ago in America. Even today, they continue to speak to us.
